Changing Bicycle Pedals: Pedal Wrench or Hex Key

I recently needed to swap my mountain bike pedals on to my road bike so I could keep riding the trainer this winter after my the cleat holes on road shoes gave out. It’s been years since I needed to remove pedals and almost didn’t remember that while most pedals require a pedal wrench, SPD pedals use 6mm allen wrench or hex key. Today I wanted to put my road pedals back on so though I’d show you how.

To remove the mountain bike Shimano SPD pedals, I used a 6MM hex key. Mine is an older one, but the modern version is the Park Tool AWS-1 3-Way Hex Wrench. This wrench has 4mm.5mm. and 6mm hex keys attached in the 3 way design. simply inset the 6mm key into the back of the pedal and twist to remove the pedal.

Once the SPD pedal was removed. I was able to hand screw in my SpeedPlay X1 road pedal. I used my Park pedal wrench to tighten the pedal to the crank arm. The modern version of my wrench is the Park Tool PW-3 Pedal Wrench. It has both 15mm and 9/16″ opening for either standard or metric pedals. I used the 15mm side.
